Kinesiology tape (K-Tape);

What is Kinesiology tape?

K tape is a hypoallergenic, latex free, cotton fibre tape with an acrylic heat activated backing. The weight and thickness of the tape is designed to be similar to the weight and thickness of skin. K tape is designed to stay on for around 3-5 days.

What is K tape used for?

K tape is used in many different ways and can help to re-educate the neuromuscular system, prevent injury, reduce inflammation, promote circulation and healing and assist in returning the body to homeostasis

How does it work?

Lymphatic drainage - Current theories suggest that taping works by pulling up the upper layers of skin which creates space between the dermis and the muscle. This space is believed to relieve pressure on the lymph channels which allows improved lymphatic drainage in the area.

Pain pathways – Using tape on painful areas can help to lift the skin which decompresses the area. This then allows the pain receptors to send new signals to the brain and tension/pain decreases.

Increase joint space - a few studies have shown that when tape has been applied over the knee and shoulder, there has been a slight increase in the joint space which can help reduce the chance of joint irritation.
